Sous son \u00e9tat liquide, il est tr\u00e8s similaire \u00e0 l&rsquo;eau, pourtant, l&rsquo;\u00e9cart de temp\u00e9rature important produit un brouillard blanc issu de la condensation de la vapeur d&rsquo;eau lorsqu&rsquo;il est expos\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;air ambiant.<\/p><p>Le d\u00e9veloppement de l&rsquo;azote liquide remonte \u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle, lorsque des scientifiques tels que Carl von Linde et James Dewar sont activement impliqu\u00e9s dans la liqu\u00e9faction de diff\u00e9rents gaz. Leurs travaux ont jet\u00e9 les bases de la <a href=\"\/fr\/cryogenie\/\">cryog\u00e9nie<\/a> moderne.<\/p><p>Aujourd&rsquo;hui, l&rsquo;azote liquide est utilis\u00e9 pour une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d&rsquo;applications. Pensez au refroidissement de mat\u00e9riaux biologiques ou d&rsquo;aliments, \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation d&rsquo;actes m\u00e9dicaux, \u00e0 la r\u00e9traction \u00e0 froid de pi\u00e8ces automobiles (technologie \u00ab shrink fit \u00bb, en anglais) et au refroidissement lors d&rsquo;exp\u00e9riences scientifiques.<\/p><h2>Temp\u00e9rature de l&rsquo;azote liquide<\/h2><p>L&rsquo;azote liquide est-il vraiment froid ? Le point d&rsquo;\u00e9bullition de l&rsquo;azote \u00e0 pression ambiante normale est de -196\u00b0C. \u00c0 cette temp\u00e9rature, la substance se transforme donc du gaz au liquide. Que se passe t-il lorsque la temp\u00e9rature remonte ? Le gaz se forme \u00e0 nouveau et la forme liquide dispara\u00eet.<\/p><h2>Production de l&rsquo;azote liquide<\/h2><p>La production d&rsquo;azote liquide a lieu dans des installations dites de s\u00e9paration de l&rsquo;air et comprend g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement les \u00e9tapes suivantes :<\/p><ul><li><strong>Purification :<\/strong> Au cours de la premi\u00e8re phase, l&rsquo;air est filtr\u00e9 pour \u00e9liminer le CO2, la poussi\u00e8re et l&rsquo;eau qui peuvent interf\u00e9rer avec le processus de liqu\u00e9faction.<\/li><li><strong>Compression et refroidissement:<\/strong> L&rsquo;air est ensuite comprim\u00e9 et refroidi selon un principe de compression et d\u2019expansion des gaz \u00e0 plusieurs \u00e9tapes. Pendant les phases de compression, la chaleur est \u00e9vacu\u00e9e et lors de l\u2019expansion, le gaz se refroidit. Ce principe est similaire \u00e0 celui d&rsquo;un r\u00e9frig\u00e9rateur ordinaire, mais beaucoup plus efficace et performant.<\/li><li><strong>Condensation:<\/strong> Un refroidissement suppl\u00e9mentaire permet d&rsquo;atteindre des temp\u00e9ratures o\u00f9 l&rsquo;argon (Ar) et l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne (O2) se condensent d&rsquo;abord et deviennent liquides, puis sont s\u00e9par\u00e9s du flux d&rsquo;air. En abaissant un peu plus la temp\u00e9rature \u00e0 -196\u00b0C, l&rsquo;azote se transforme \u00e9galement en liquide.<\/li><\/ul><p>Les deux seuls gaz qui ne sont pas filtr\u00e9s de l&rsquo;air sont l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne (H2) et l&rsquo;h\u00e9lium (He). Ceux-ci restent sous forme gazeuse, car le gaz est encore trop chaud \u00e0 ce stade pour devenir liquide.<\/p><h2>Stockage de l&rsquo;azote liquide<\/h2><p>Apr\u00e8s la production d&rsquo;azote liquide, <a href=\"https:\/\/demaco-cryogenics.com\/fr\/blog\/stockage-de-lazote-liquide-solutions-et-equipements-2\/\">l&rsquo;azote liquide doit \u00eatre stock\u00e9 en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9<\/a>. Cela peut se faire de plusieurs mani\u00e8res:<\/p><ul><li>Dans de grands r\u00e9servoirs pour le stockage \u00e0 long terme.<\/li><li>Dans des conteneurs ou des Dewars pour le stockage de petites quantit\u00e9s ou pour le transport.<\/li><\/ul><p>Dans le stockage de l&rsquo;azote liquide, une chose est cruciale : la chaleur doit \u00eatre maintenue hors du r\u00e9servoir, du Dewar ou de la ligne de transfert autant que possible. Si le liquide cryog\u00e9nique chauffe, du gaz se forme. La formation de gaz entra\u00eene une augmentation de la pression dans le syst\u00e8me et, si le gaz peut s\u2019\u00e9vaporer, une perte d\u2019approvisionnement. Et si le gaz ne peut pas sortir du syst\u00e8me, que se passe t-il ? La pression augmente alors consid\u00e9rablement, et cela peut devenir dangereux.<\/p><h2>Isolation sous vide<\/h2><p>La solution ultime pour stocker et transporter l&rsquo;azote liquide en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et \u00e0 la bonne temp\u00e9rature est l&rsquo;isolation sous vide. Cette technique cr\u00e9e un vide entre les doubles parois des cuves de stockage ou des lignes de transfert.
