Hydrogen is a versatile, clean, and safe energy carrier that can be used as a “fuel” in a fuel cell or as a feedstock in the industrial sector. The gas does not occur spontaneously in nature and must be produced from water (electrolysis) or natural gas (steam-reforming).
Hydrogen has a very low density, which makes the gas relatively challenging to store and transport. It takes up much space unless put under enormous pressure or liquefied at a temperature of -253 centigrade. Obviously, at these extreme temperatures, the use of first-class cryogenic infrastructures is essential.
